The Republica Square, together with its Obelisk, is the main representative and symbolic public space of the city of Buenos Aires (Greater BA : pop. 13 M) and of Argentina (pop. 38 M) as a whole. Its monument, the Obelisk, designed by Arch. Alberto Prebisch, is 222 ft. (67.5 mt.) tall, has a 530 sq. ft. (49.2 sq. mt) base, and weighs 170 tons. The project includes 16,145 sq. ft. (1,500 sq. mt.) of underground commercial areas which serve as transfer station between subway lines.
